Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) are a common practice in the healthcare industry, specifically in cases related to orthopedic surgery. These examinations are conducted by an unbiased orthopedic surgeon, in order to evaluate a patient’s medical condition and determine the necessary steps for treatment. The purpose of an IME is to assess the necessity and appropriateness of a surgical procedure, determine the extent of an individual’s injuries or disability, and evaluate their ability to return to work.

During the IME process, the orthopedic surgeon will review the patient’s medical records and conduct a physical examination to assess their range of motion, strength, and overall function. The evaluator may also ask the patient questions about their medical history, current symptoms, and overall condition. In some cases, additional testing or evaluation may be requested. Once the IME is completed, the orthopedic surgeon will generate a report outlining their findings and recommendations for further treatment or management of the patient’s condition. This report may include information about the patient’s diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options, as well as any necessary restrictions or limitations.
